Behind the fridge is the forgotten zone in every kitchen. Years of dust, lost food, pet hair, and condenser-coil build-up. Pulling out the fridge and cleaning behind takes 20 minutes — and it changes how efficiently the appliance runs, how clean the air smells, and how much you pay in power.
Why behind the fridge matters more than you think
Three things accumulate behind a fridge over years: dust on the condenser coils, debris on the floor, and rodent-attracting crumbs in the space between fridge and wall. Each one has a real cost. Dusty coils make the fridge work 10-20% harder. Floor debris draws rodents and insects. Crumbs and grease behind the appliance breed bacteria and smell.
The good news: 20 minutes once a year fixes all three.

Step 1 — Turn off and unplug the fridge
Before you do anything else, turn the fridge off at the wall and unplug. Pulling out a powered fridge risks the cord and trips the breaker.
If the contents are perishable and you want to keep the door closed during the clean, work quickly — modern fridges hold cold for 2-3 hours without power if the door stays shut.
Step 2 — Slide the fridge out
Most domestic fridges have small wheels or sliders at the back. Pull straight out, not at an angle.
- Remove anything on top of the fridge first
- Pull straight forward, 1-2 feet
- If it sticks, check the floor under the front legs (often a small ledge)
- Two people is easier and safer for full-size fridges
- For plumbed-in fridges (water line, ice maker), check for slack in the line before pulling

Step 3 — Vacuum the condenser coils
The black grid at the back of the fridge is the condenser coil. Dust on it traps heat — the fridge has to work harder to dump heat from the compressor.
- Vacuum coils with brush attachment
- Use crevice tool for tight spots
- For very dusty coils, a soft brush dislodges the matted layer first
- Wipe the compressor cover (the black box at the bottom rear)
- Check the drain pan underneath (some fridges have one) — empty if full
Clean coils run 10-20% more efficiently. On a typical Australian household fridge, that is $30-$60 saved per year in electricity.

Step 4 — Floor + wall behind
Now address the floor space the fridge was sitting on, and the wall behind.
- Vacuum the floor thoroughly (often crumbs, dust, pet hair)
- Mop the floor with neutral cleaner
- Wipe the wall behind — usually scuffed at the back edge of the fridge
- Look for any signs of rodent activity (droppings, gnaw marks) and report if found
- Check the cord — any visible damage should be flagged and the fridge serviced
Step 5 — Clean the top + sides of the fridge
While you have access, hit the surfaces a normal clean never reaches.
- Wipe top of fridge — usually a dust crust here
- Wipe sides (especially if the fridge sits next to a cabinet)
- Polish stainless or coloured exterior with appropriate cleaner
- Wipe the door handles thoroughly (skin oils accumulate)
Step 6 — Push back, plug in, allow time to cool
Slide the fridge back into position. Plug in. Allow 30-60 minutes for the fridge to return to optimal temperature before re-loading large quantities of food.
- Slide back carefully — check the water line and cord
- Plug back in
- Wait 30 minutes minimum
- Re-load contents when fridge has returned to 4°C or below
How often to deep clean behind the fridge
Once a year for most households. Twice a year if you have a long-haired dog or cat (more hair behind the fridge), or if your fridge sits in a high-traffic kitchen.
