Behind the Fridge: What Hides There and How to Clean It

Behind the fridge is the forgotten zone in every kitchen. Years of dust, lost food, pet hair, and condenser-coil build-up. Pulling out the fridge and cleaning behind takes 20 minutes — and it changes how efficiently the appliance runs, how clean the air smells, and how much you pay in power.

Why behind the fridge matters more than you think

Three things accumulate behind a fridge over years: dust on the condenser coils, debris on the floor, and rodent-attracting crumbs in the space between fridge and wall. Each one has a real cost. Dusty coils make the fridge work 10-20% harder. Floor debris draws rodents and insects. Crumbs and grease behind the appliance breed bacteria and smell.

The good news: 20 minutes once a year fixes all three.

Before and after pulling out the fridge — the forgotten zone reset in 20 minutes.

Step 1 — Turn off and unplug the fridge

Before you do anything else, turn the fridge off at the wall and unplug. Pulling out a powered fridge risks the cord and trips the breaker.

If the contents are perishable and you want to keep the door closed during the clean, work quickly — modern fridges hold cold for 2-3 hours without power if the door stays shut.

Step 2 — Slide the fridge out

Most domestic fridges have small wheels or sliders at the back. Pull straight out, not at an angle.

  • Remove anything on top of the fridge first
  • Pull straight forward, 1-2 feet
  • If it sticks, check the floor under the front legs (often a small ledge)
  • Two people is easier and safer for full-size fridges
  • For plumbed-in fridges (water line, ice maker), check for slack in the line before pulling

Three things hiding behind your fridge right now — each fixed in minutes once the fridge is pulled out.
“Hamish pulled the fridge out and vacuumed coils that were inch-thick in dust. Fridge runs quieter now and my power bill dropped about $15 a month.”
— Carol M, Wangaratta · First-time deep clean

Step 3 — Vacuum the condenser coils

The black grid at the back of the fridge is the condenser coil. Dust on it traps heat — the fridge has to work harder to dump heat from the compressor.

  • Vacuum coils with brush attachment
  • Use crevice tool for tight spots
  • For very dusty coils, a soft brush dislodges the matted layer first
  • Wipe the compressor cover (the black box at the bottom rear)
  • Check the drain pan underneath (some fridges have one) — empty if full

Clean coils run 10-20% more efficiently. On a typical Australian household fridge, that is $30-$60 saved per year in electricity.

Step 4 — Floor + wall behind

Now address the floor space the fridge was sitting on, and the wall behind.

  • Vacuum the floor thoroughly (often crumbs, dust, pet hair)
  • Mop the floor with neutral cleaner
  • Wipe the wall behind — usually scuffed at the back edge of the fridge
  • Look for any signs of rodent activity (droppings, gnaw marks) and report if found
  • Check the cord — any visible damage should be flagged and the fridge serviced

Step 5 — Clean the top + sides of the fridge

While you have access, hit the surfaces a normal clean never reaches.

  • Wipe top of fridge — usually a dust crust here
  • Wipe sides (especially if the fridge sits next to a cabinet)
  • Polish stainless or coloured exterior with appropriate cleaner
  • Wipe the door handles thoroughly (skin oils accumulate)
“There were three years of crumbs and one dead-mouse skeleton behind ours. I had no idea. Now we do it annually with the rest of the kitchen deep clean.”
— Phil G, Beechworth · Annual deep schedule

Step 6 — Push back, plug in, allow time to cool

Slide the fridge back into position. Plug in. Allow 30-60 minutes for the fridge to return to optimal temperature before re-loading large quantities of food.

  • Slide back carefully — check the water line and cord
  • Plug back in
  • Wait 30 minutes minimum
  • Re-load contents when fridge has returned to 4°C or below

How often to deep clean behind the fridge

Once a year for most households. Twice a year if you have a long-haired dog or cat (more hair behind the fridge), or if your fridge sits in a high-traffic kitchen.

Three things to check before pulling out the fridge
BEFORE
1 min
Switch off + unplug
Never pull a powered fridge. Risk of cord damage and breaker trip.
BEFORE
1 min
Check the water line
Plumbed-in fridges have a flex line. Ensure slack before pulling forward.
BEFORE
30 sec
Clear the top
Anything on top will fall when you tilt the fridge forward.
Signs it’s overdue behind your fridge
  • Fridge is running more often than it used to
  • Power bill has crept up despite no usage change
  • There’s a faint stale smell near the appliance
  • You can see a dust line peeking out from behind
  • Pets have been heavy moulters this season
  • Last clean was more than 12 months ago
  • You’ve never cleaned behind it

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I damage my fridge by pulling it out?+
Not if you do it carefully. Pull straight forward, mind the water line, and slide back gently. Don’t tilt or angle.
How often should I clean condenser coils?+
Once a year minimum. Twice if you have long-haired pets — fur accumulates on coils fast.
Will the food spoil while the fridge is out?+
If the door stays closed and you’re done in 30 minutes, no. Modern fridges hold cold for 2-3 hours.
Do you clean behind built-in fridges?+
Yes — we vacuum coils through the front grille on built-ins. Pulling the unit out usually means dismantling the cabinet, which we do not do.
Why does my fridge run more loudly when coils are dirty?+
The compressor works harder to dump heat through dusty coils. More cycles, longer cycles, more noise.
Can I use a leaf blower to dust the coils?+
Better than nothing but it sends dust everywhere. Vacuum with a brush attachment is the proper tool.
How long does this whole job take?+
About 20 minutes once a year if your fridge can pull out. Built-ins are quicker (5 minutes through the grille).
What if I find pest evidence?+
Flag it and arrange a pest control visit before cleaning. Some droppings carry pathogens — don’t sweep without protective gear.
