A bathroom deep clean takes 1 to 1.5 hours per bathroom and tackles five things a regular clean never touches: grout discolouration, mineral build-up on tapware, mould around silicone, the inside of the exhaust fan housing, and the back of the toilet pan. Here is how we work through them, in order.
What changes between a regular and a deep bathroom clean
A regular clean wipes basins, mops floors, polishes mirrors, cleans the toilet, and quick-wipes the shower screen. It takes about 20-30 minutes per bathroom. A bathroom deep clean adds another 30-60 minutes of detail work on the parts that visibly age: grout, tapware, glass, silicone, and the hidden zones.

Step 1 — Vacuum first, before any water hits anything
Counter-intuitive but essential. Hair, dust, and trapped particles need to come out dry — once wet, they smear and double the time of every wipe after.
- Vacuum tile floor, including around the toilet base
- Vacuum behind the toilet
- Vacuum the exhaust fan grille (often surprisingly grey)
- Vacuum vanity floor and under-basin shelf
Step 2 — Apply cleaners and let them dwell
The biggest mistake in bathroom deep cleaning is not letting cleaners sit long enough. Mineral build-up needs 5-10 minutes of contact time. Soap scum needs even longer.
- Spray shower glass with vinegar + water (acid dissolves mineral spots) — 10 min dwell
- Apply grout cleaner to floor and wall tiles — 10 min dwell
- Apply toilet bowl cleaner under the rim — 10 min dwell
- Spray tapware with descaler — 5 min dwell
- Spray exhaust fan housing with degreaser — 5 min dwell
While these dwell, we work on the easier wipe-downs — mirrors, vanity surface, basin, etc.

Step 3 — Grout treatment, the slowest job
Grout treatment is the single most time-consuming task in a bathroom deep clean. White grout that has shifted to grey takes 20-30 minutes per bathroom to scrub with a stiff brush and grout cleaner. Mould or mildew areas need a fungicidal cleaner for 10-15 minutes.
If grout has shifted beyond grey to brown or black, regular cleaners often cannot bring it back fully. We will tell you upfront if you are in regrouting territory rather than over-promise.

Step 4 — Shower glass + tapware descaling
Mineral build-up on shower glass and tapware needs acid (vinegar, citric acid, or commercial descaler) plus dwell time plus mechanical scrub. Skip any one and the result is mediocre.
- Glass: spray, wait 10 min, scrub with non-scratch pad, rinse, squeegee dry
- Tapware: spray descaler, wait 5 min, scrub with old toothbrush around edges, rinse, polish with microfibre
- Showerhead: if mineral-blocked, unscrew, soak in vinegar overnight, reinstall
- Drains: pour boiling water + bicarb + vinegar, let fizz, flush
Step 5 — The exhaust fan, behind the toilet, under the vanity
These are the three areas that distinguish a real deep clean from a thorough regular clean.
- Exhaust fan housing. Unscrew the grille, vacuum the dust, wipe with damp cloth, replace. Often visibly dirty.
- Behind the toilet. Slim space, mostly inaccessible to a quick mop. Cloth-and-degreaser by hand.
- Inside the vanity. Empty out, wipe shelves, inspect for moisture damage, reload.
Step 6 — Silicone and seals
Silicone around the shower base, basin, and bath edge is where mould most commonly appears in Wangaratta homes. If the silicone is just discoloured, a fungicidal cleaner with 15 min dwell often restores it. If it is cracked or peeling, it needs replacing.
We do not replace silicone as part of a deep clean — but we will flag it on the walkthrough. Resealing a shower silicone bead in Wangaratta runs $80-$150.
Maintenance between deep cleans
The bathroom is the room where between-deep-clean habits make the biggest difference. Five seconds a day stops most of the build-up that takes 30 minutes to scrub off later.
- Squeegee the shower glass after every shower
- Wipe basin and tap base each day
- Run the exhaust fan during AND for 10 min after every shower
- Leave the shower door slightly open to let moisture escape
